ENOSHIMA ISLAND

The perfect easy day trip from Tokyo that feels like a mini coastal escape!

If you are looking for an easy coastal day trip near Tokyo, Enoshima is one of the best options. I live in Kamakura, so this is basically right next door for me. It is close enough that I go casually whenever I want ocean air, good food, and a quick change of pace. Walking across the bridge is when it hits. You get ocean views, street food smells, and a busy but fun atmosphere.

How to Get There

Option 1 (Easiest)

From Shinjuku Station

Take the Odakyu Line (Odakyu Enoshima Line)

Ride directly to Katase-Enoshima Station

Walk 10 to 15 minutes across the bridge to the island

Time: About 70 to 90 minutes

Option 2 (JR Route)

From Tokyo Station

Take JR Tokaido Line to Fujisawa Station

Transfer to Odakyu Line to Katase-Enoshima

Option 3 (Scenic Route)

Take the Enoden Line to Enoshima Station

This is the famous coastal train with ocean views

What to Do

Enoshima is designed in a way where you start at the bottom, climb your way to the top, and then come back down, seeing different things along the way. It is not just one destination. The experience is the walk itself, with stops for shrines, food, views, and shops as you go higher.

Explore Enoshima Shrine
As you make your way up, you will pass through multiple shrine areas. This is a good place to try omikuji (fortune slips), where you draw a random fortune and can tie it up on the grounds if you get a bad one.

Take the Escalator (Optional)
If you do not want to walk the entire way up, there is a paid escalator system called the Enoshima Escar that takes you part of the way.

  • Cost: about $2 to $3 (around ¥360 to ¥400)

  • It is split into sections and only goes upward

  • You will still need to walk some parts, especially near the top

Go to the Enoshima Sea Candle

This is the main viewpoint on the island and one of the most popular things to do. The Sea Candle is a lighthouse with an observation deck at the top, where you can get 360 degree views of the ocean and coastline. On clear days, you can even see Mt. Fuji in the distance. There is an indoor and outdoor viewing area, and it is especially worth going around sunset when the lighting is best.

That tall building you can see from far away!

Entrance Details

  • Price: about $5 to $6 (around ¥800)

  • Includes access to the surrounding garden area

Walk the Island

  • Explore small streets, shops, and food spots

  • Check out coastal paths and viewpoints

  • Visit the caves if you want something a little more adventurous

The main idea is just to keep walking upward. The higher you go, the better the views get.

Also important to know The island is full of local cats! You will see them everywhere just relaxing around the streets and viewpoints. A lot of the shops also sell cat themed items.

What to Eat

Enoshima is especially famous for shirasu (whitebait), and you will see it everywhere on the island. It is served in a lot of different ways, most commonly over rice, but also mixed into other dishes, so it is something you will naturally end up trying without even planning it.

One thing that makes eating here unique is that restaurants and cafes are spread all over the island, not just at the entrance. As you walk higher up, you will find more spots tucked along the paths, and if you go far enough, a lot of them have incredible cliffside ocean views looking out over the water.

Must try snack of the island!

Another must-try is the famous smashed seafood senbei. These are super thin rice crackers made by pressing and flattening a whole squid, shrimp, or crab right in front of you. They are crispy, slightly salty, and make for a really good quick snack while walking around.

Check this place out

There are also a few more things that make it stand out. There is a well known myth that visiting with your boyfriend or girlfriend can lead to a breakup because the island’s goddess gets jealous. And in the summer, the coastline comes alive with fireworks shows that make it one of the best times to visit.

Enoshima Island is said to have been created in 552 AD when the goddess Benzaiten rose from the sea, forming the island and subduing a nearby five-headed dragon that later became its protector; this legend is also why people say couples who visit together might break up, since the goddess is believed to get jealous. The island quickly became a spiritual site with the establishment of Enoshima Shrine, and by the Edo Period it had turned into a popular getaway destination for people from Edo, which is why today it blends mythology, religion, and tourism all in one place.

Enoshima is one of those places that is easy to visit but still feels like a full experience. Since I live in Kamakura, it is somewhere I can go anytime without much planning, and it always feels like a reset. Overall, it is a mix of scenery, food, culture, and a little bit of chaos in a good way, which is exactly why it is worth going.
